Cameron CNHI Complete

PNHP is pleased to announce the completion of the Cameron County Natural Heritage Inventory, the 66th inventory of its kind. This project began in 2008, with fieldwork wrapping up in 2011. Sixty-one extant element occurrences have formed the basis for twenty-nine Natural Heritage Areas (NHAs). Cameron County is part of the "big woods" section of Pennsylvania and is the third least densely populated county in the Commonwealth. Much of the County is owned by DCNR and PGC, with most of the remaining land in large parcels under the ownership of timber management organizations. The southern portion of the county is famous for the reestablished elk population, which along with hunting and fishing opportunities supports a healthy eco-tourism industry. Cameron County serves as extremely important habitat for a number of big woods' species, including the timber rattlesnake (Crotalus horridus) and northern water shrew (Sorex palustris albibarbis), as well as several species considered "globally vulnerable" to extinction, such as the mountain earthsnake (Virginia pulchra) and northern barrens tiger beetle (Cicindela patruela). While development pressure is relatively low in Cameron County, the region faces challenges relating to the recent boom in shale gas development. The Cameron County Natural Heritage Inventory is complete and available to download here.

Delaware 2011 County Natural Heritage Inventory Update

The Delaware County Natural Heritage Inventory Update has been completed. This project was an update to the original Delaware CNHI of 1992. The project was funded by DCNR's Wild Resource Conservation Fund and additional funding provided by the County. Despite several centuries of habitat modification by agriculture and development, Delaware County still retains essential fragments of distinctive habitats that support species of concern. Delaware County has 215 individual occurrences of species tracked by PNHP, including those listed as rare, threatened and endangered. It falls 19th out of the Commonwealth's 67 counties for the number of species of concern. Two of these, bog turtle and serpentine aster, are considered globally rare. The county also contains much of the small part of the state that falls within the Atlantic Coastal Plain physiographic province and the tidally influenced portion of the Delaware River. Download a copy of the Delaware report here.
